I remember very little of Java, but the two things that stuck out:
Don't create new objects unless you absolutely need them in your coding.
Don't write your own damn library.

I taught it for 3 semesters. Been a while but I could probably help you if you get stuck with anything.
The Internet will be your best friend; just look stuff up because there's a shit ton of tutorials out there.

Stackoverflow.com is your new best friend. Any question or task that pops up, search there first. Takes but a second, and the vast majority of the time someone has solved/built what you're looking for already. -IDL, Python, Java, Fortran (eeeewwww) guy.

Cool, thank you. I've heard of the site, but never had reason before now to visit it.

As an old Java guy, I'd recommend moving to Ruby. But that's just me. Otherwise you're going to be using method names like: SimpleBeanFactoryAwareAspectInstanceFactory.
Very intuitive. Expect callouses on your finger tips. Also expect to have employment opportunities in IT departments across the US.

That's sort of what I am doing this for. Looking to get the fuck out of my current company and into a new one.
